Built in 1894, this historical mansion not only showcases the intricate designs and lavish lifestyle of the late 19th century but also embodies the enduring spirit of community and heritage in Putnam County.
The origins of the Edwards House trace back to the endeavors of Thomas and Isabella Edwards, who began their life together farming just east of Leipsic in 1861. Their four sons, growing up amidst the burgeoning local industry, eventually ventured into the lumber business, founding the Buckeye Stave Company in 1886. This venture propelled the Edwards family to prominence, making them one of the most prosperous landowners across Defiance, Henry, and Putnam counties. It was this wealth that enabled the construction of a magnificent mansion on the west side of Leipsic, a home for one of the sons, John Edwards. The cost of this architectural masterpiece? A princely sum of approximately $21,000—a fortune at the time.
Crafted with brick walls and a slate roof, the mansion is an exquisite example of Late Victorian architecture. Its aesthetic appeal is heightened by the detailed stenciling, the molds of lion heads, and the embossed gold that adorn its facade and interiors.
